What is a Periodontist?

While everyone is familiar with their general dentist, a periodontist sometimes needs more explanation. Allow us to better explain exactly what a periodontist and implant surgeon is. “Perio” means around, and in the context of oral health, it refers to all structures surrounding the teeth: our gum tissue, supporting bone, and the intimate connection between the two. A periodontist is the dental specialist considered to be the authority on everything surrounding the tooth. They are often called on to determine if a tooth’s foundation is sound enough to support dentistry.

The journey to becoming a Periodontist and Implant Surgeon exceeds that of a general dentist with respect to the amount of training required. Following dental school three additional years of specialized training in a residency program. During the course of training periodontist treat a variety of cases under the close supervision of instructors. Beyond treating patients, residents are expected to thoroughly understand the literature from a scientific perspective and routinely present on this body of working knowledge. This level of rigorous and consistent training has prepared Dr. Delica to handle even the most complicated periodontal and implant surgical issues with confidence.

Why Board Certification Matters

To become board certified with the American Board of Periodontology, a dentist must first complete an additional three years of specialized training to become periodontist. Secondly, periodontists must sit a certification exam given by the thought leaders in the field. A Board-Certified clinician has been proven by the highest standards to be beyond competent in addressing disease in the tooth supporting structures. Therefore, when you turn to an experienced, board-certified periodontist like Dr. Delica, you have the added peace of mind that you or your smile is in well-trained, capable hands.
