Scaling & Root Planing

Removing these substances at home or with a traditional dental cleaning is nearly impossible, but this is where scaling and root planing can help. Scaling enables our team to break up and clear away the plaque and bacteria that is causing a patient’s infection, and then root planing is when we smooth out the rough surfaces of the tooth roots. This helps a patient’s gums heal faster and can also lower the risk of reinfection.
Periostat Treatment
Periostat is a medication we can prescribe a patient to help them treat gum disease between their in-office appointments. It works by counteracting the enzymes produced by oral bacteria that break down the gum and bone tissue around a tooth. All a patient has to do is take a pill as instructed. Between Periostat, a consistent oral hygiene routine at home, and visits with us, a patient should be able to completely overcome periodontal disease.
Osseous Surgery
In addition to breaking down the gums, periodontal disease bacteria can also eat away at the bone that supports the teeth. This can cause deformities in the bone that create pockets within the gums that trap bacteria, plus this can negatively affect the appearance of the smile. Using a virtually painless procedure, Dr. Delica can gently pull the gum tissue away from the teeth and reshape the damaged bone so it is smoother and healthier. This can reduce or eliminate troublesome pockets and restore someone’s confident smile.
Oral Cancer Screening
Whenever you come to see us, our team will take a few minutes to examine your mouth for any lesions, growths, or discolored patches of tissue that could indicate oral cancer. When it’s detected early, oral cancer is easily treated and has a very high survival rate. If we find something that may be a sign of cancer during your screening, we’ll refer you to a specialist right away to get a full diagnosis. That way, treatment can begin immediately if needed.
